The 2013 Streaming Media Europe 101
The great myth of globalisation, particularly when it comes to technology, is that the world is getting “flatter,” as the neoliberal American economist Thomas L. Friedman famously asserted. If that were true, then one would expect lists such as our Streaming Media Europe 101 to become less local and more international over time. But even a cursory skimming of this year’s list suggests that local expertise is becoming more important than ever.
Indeed, while 63 companies in our inaugural 2012 list were based in Europe, 76 of this year’s companies are firmly European-based. The rest are based elsewhere, but they have such a strong European and international presence that they belong on any list looking at companies in the online video space, regardless of where it might be geographically focused.
Of particular note is the number of European-based (and Russian-based) content delivery networks on this year’s list, emphasising what Streaming Media Europe has been about all along: the recognition that while some things are universal, there are always going to be regional and local differences that will be best served not by global corporations but by smaller firms with expertise and experience in their own areas.
As with last year’s list, this year’s Streaming Media Europe 101 began with a list of more than 250 companies, all of which were ranked by our editorial and publishing staff on a scale of 1 (has no business being on a list of leaders in the industry) and 5 (absolutely must be on a list of industry leaders). All of the companies that made the final 101 are making noise in their own neighbourhoods, and plenty of them are gaining recognition on the world stage.
