The 2015 Streaming Media Europe 101
This year’s Streaming Media Europe 101—our fourth annual list of the most interesting, important, and influential companies in the online video space—reveals an industry in which European companies are more than holding their own against the increasing expansion of U.S.-based competitors that are moving into the market. If anything, we’re seeing European companies grow beyond their own regional roots to compete on the global stage.
And while we can’t deny the importance of a few U.S.-based giants with significant European presences, less than a quarter of this year’s entries have their home bases outside of Europe. And while you’ll see plenty of familiar names on the list, there are 21 companies that weren’t here in 2014—a turnover rate that indicates an industry with a healthy combination of mature companies and new players.
You’ll note that this list is absent of content publishers and, for the most part, telcos. For this list, we’re emphasising companies that are making technological strides, and making those technologies available to content publishers. So yes, that means all of the companies on the list are vendors, but they are chosen without regard to whether or not they advertise in our magazine or on our website.
So how do we pick the Streaming Media Europe 101? We start with a master list of all the companies we’re aware of in our space, then ask our editorial and publishing team to rank them on a scale of zero (doesn’t belong on the final list at all) to five (no list of important companies would be complete without it). The top 101 make the list. Interestingly, not a single company averaged a perfect 5.
(You’ll note that some of our voters—contributing editors—also work with companies that ended up on the list. Those editors’ votes were not counted when figuring those companies’ rankings.)
