Video sharing site Dailymotion has released an updated version of its online video player, claiming a "faster, sleeker design." The player was first rolled out to the site's biggest markets on July 28 and became available in the U.S. on August 3. It's been in development since January of 2014, and has been in beta since March.

The player was rewritten from scratch, and uses Flash first with an HTML5 fallback. Both the Flash and HTML5 versions offer the same features, which is a change. Dailymotion isn't going with HTML5 first just yet, as the player doesn't support adaptive video in all browsers. A company representative said that's currently in development.

Dailymotion now fully supports 4K in the player and on the backend, and has added Chromecast support.

The developers acknowledged the growing importance of mobile video by making the player resize to fit any device. Also, the mobile player now offers the same features as the desktop version.

The player offers an increased range of accessibility features, supporting screen readers, subtitles, and voice-over programs.

Dailymotion's brand partners will appreciate that the player now offers the ability to add a linkable logo overlay in one corner, and to change the color scheme to match a brand's identity.
