HbbTV Growing Outside Europe, Now Compatible with 20M Devices
HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) is taking off, and not just in Europe, the HbbTV Association announced. Adoption of the hybrid standard has grown in over 20 nations. Countries in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa are now testing and deploying HbbTV.
With that level of adoption has come greater device support. The agency reports that over 20 million devices currently support HbbTV.
Membership in the HbbTB Association has grown by 25 percent in the last 12 months. It now counts 74 members. Additionally, developers have created hundreds of new HbbTV apps.
The HbbTV Symposium Europe, held earlier this month, attracted 200 delegates representing 28 countries. The agency says that demonstrates that HbbTV is growing as an international TV standard.
"We are truly excited to see HbbTV achieve traction across the globe. It is rewarding to see the rich innovation that is made possible with HbbTV and its impact on TV viewers around the world," says Klaus Illgner, chair of the HbbTV Association. "We remain dedicated to continuing our work to the benefit of the global TV community. To this end, the HbbTV Association continues to focus on extending the scope of its standard and providing the tools to help its implementation to benefit the entire eco-system. "
HbbTV uses elements from a mix of standards, including OIPF, CEA, DVB, MPEG-DASH, and W3C. The HbbTV Association took over for the Open IPTV Forum in June of 2014.
