LaLiga Streaming on Facebook Live, a First for European Football
For the first time, a European football league will stream a match live over Facebook. LaLiga, the premiere Spanish football division, will offer a live stream Atletico Madrid taking on Athletic Club. Athletic is currently ranked first in the league, and Atletico Madrid third.
While LaLiga isn't announcing the streaming resolution, it says the match will be offered in TV quality. The stream will be professionally produced and will be available to viewers around the world without any geo-restrictions.
LaLiga is partnering with social video company Grabyo on the live event. The two have worked together since November 2015, with Grabyo distributing short-form clips to LaLiga's social platforms. As of April 2016, Grabyo is an official Facebook live streaming partner.
“Live streaming is the most important trend in social media this year," says Gareth Capon, CEO of Grabyo. "The global shift towards fans consuming content on their mobile devices is driven by social platforms with video driving greatest engagement for fans around the world. Consumers have smartphones within arm's reach 24 hours a day. No other platform offers this opportunity for reach and viewing across all demographic groups."
Grabyo notes that it also works with Fox Sports, The FA, The RFU, and Chelsea FC on live Facebook streaming.
The LaLiga match will take place Saturday, May 28 at 10:45 BST.
