OpenTV Again Sues Netflix, This Time in the Netherlands
OpenTV is taking its patent infringement fight against Netflix on the road. OpenTV is a digital TV solutions company owned by the Kudelski Group, and in December of 2012 the company filed suit on Netflix in the United States claiming that Netflix knowingly infringes on seven of its patents. Today, it filed a similar suit in the Netherlands, attempting to stop further infringement in that country.
In its statement, the Kudelski Group didn't disclose which patents it was challenging. However, its U.S. lawsuit lists these seven patents:
- No. 6,018,768: “Enhanced Video Programming System and Method for Incorporating and Displaying Retrieved Integrated Internet Information Segments”
- No. 6,233,736: “Media Online Service Access System and Method”
- No. 7,055,169: “Supporting Common Interactive Television Functionality Through Presentation Engine Syntax”
- No. 7,409,437: “Enhanced Video Programming System and Method for Incorporating and Displaying Retrieved Integrated Internet Information Segments”

“The Group remains committed to protecting its substantial and ongoing investment in innovation for the benefit of the digital video ecosystem,” says Joe Chernesky, Kudelski’s senior vice president of intellectual property and innovation.
The Kudelski Group is listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange, while OpenTV is based in San Francisco, California. Kudelski acquired OpenTV in 2009.
