Edgeware Simplifies Video Delivery with Its Intuitively Scalable System at IBC 2012
Company’s industry-recognized products and technologies enable intuitive growth and converged video delivery for operators
Amsterdam, The Netherlands(07 Sep 2012)
Edgeware, the technology leader in distributed video delivery, today announced that EpicTV, owned by Finland´s largest telecom operator Elisa, has built a Content Delivery Network (CDN) using Edgeware’s Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) system to deliver premium over-the-top (OTT) adventure sports movies and TV shows to multiple devices across Europe. The EpicTV Shows are available worldwide.
The innovative sports service, available in 15 countries across Europe, is supported on multiple connected devices, including iPads, Android devices, computers, and connected TVs, using HTTP adaptive streaming protocols such as Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Apple HLS. EpicTV uses a subscription based business model. For €6.99 per month, subscribers get unlimited access to a massive library of premium quality on-demand TV Shows and films on skiing, snowboarding, surfing, climbing, mountain biking, paddling, wingsuit/BASE jumping and more.
Instead of delivering the service through a third-party CDN provider, EpicTV built its own pan-European content delivery network using the Edgeware Convoy VDN Management software and the dedicated WTV-2X Web TV Servers, co-located in multiple countries. Mediatrade, a digital media production, distribution and management systems solution provider, was the systems integrator for this deal.
“Edgeware’s solution for CDNs has significant advantages over generic server-based systems, and allows us to cost-efficiently manage our own premium services infrastructure,” said Panu Lehti, VP Business Development Elisa. “The ultra-low power consumption and 1U half rack size appliances are ideal for co-location environments, and the Convoy VDN system provides CDN management and real time QoE reporting capabilities.”
“EpicTV’s innovative OTT service deployment is a great example of how operators and content owners can implement its own international CDN infrastructure as an alternative to using an expensive third party CDN service,” said Joachim Roos, CEO, Edgeware. “By doing this, they can increase QoE, lower delivery costs, and allow a future wholesale monetization model.”
Meet Edgeware at IBC in Amsterdam, Sept 7-11, at stand 4.B71. Convoy VDN was recently shortlisted for the CSI Awards in the category "Best IPTV technology or service,” and for the 2012 Streaming Media European Reader´s Choice Awards in the category “Best Streaming Innovation 2012.”
