Porsche Motorsport selects IPTV Solutions from Teracue at the World Endurance Championships
Odelzhausen, Bavaria(07 Mar 2016)
Porsche Motorsport relies on IPTV solutions from the leading manufacturer Teracue. In top-class sport, like here in FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), big amounts of data must be processed to run the complex racing cars.
The majority of the data (telemetry) is transmitted to the pit in real time using radio from the cars. There the information is distributed using a LAN infrastructure.
Additionally live video signals from cameras inside and outside the race car and from around the race track are received and used to monitor and assess the driving conditions.
Avoiding the necessity to build a coax network alongside the ethernet based PC network all video sources are converted to IPTV streams and distributed over the IP network at the pit.
On top of that all video streams are recorded for later analysis. During the races it must be possible to export clips of on-going recordings, to use them as video evidence in case of an incident, and show them promptly to the race management center.
Cameras at the race track provide the signal sources in DVB-C/T or ATSC format to the pit. Using the DMM-Series IPTV gateways these signals are converted to IP and distributed over the network. Uncompressed video signals, i.e. SDI from race car cameras, are encoded and streamed using ENC-300.
With MC-SCREEN encoding software it is possible to encode PC desktops directly and add the displayed information as video stream to the network. Streams coming from IP cameras (i.e. pit camera) with RTSP protocol are received with MC-ROUTE and converted to standard multicast traffic. Decoding of the streams is done with Teracue IP Multi Viewer and IPTV set-top-boxes.
To provide video evidence all existing streams are recorded using ICUE Media Server. In case of an incident and pending penalty, i.e. potential fault during the pit stop, the team must prove all work has been done according to the rules to avoid the penalty.
ICUE offers the possibility to trim, clip and export the needed recordings fast and direct to provide the video evidence to the race management center.
"A flexible product solution from a single source as well as the personal contact to Teracue were particularly important for us," noted Markus Currle, coordinator LMP1 IT Track support. The various needs of Porsche Motorsport make the use of a standard solution impossible. The ICUE functionality was extended specifically to our needs by Teracue. Thus, a modern and reliable end-to-end solution from software to the use of DVB gateways was provided".
